Student Stress – Makes School Life Challenging

Whether it is high school or college, the pressures of student stress are eminently present in the student body on campuses everywhere.  Student stress can be caused by a number of issues that plague the teen and young adult.  There is a constant pressure to strive to succeed inflicted by parents and the students themselves.  Student stress can build, and if not released carefully, it will be released in unhealthy ways.

Causes of student stress:

Back to school – Often, student stress can begin to build before the school year even starts. As the first day approaches, anxiety can build.  Many students overload on an abundance of classes that overwhelm them.  A solution to student stress is preparation. Gain an insight to the classes that are to be taken.  Learn the easiest routes from class to class before the semester begins, as this will reduce student stress when it comes time to make it to each one on time.  If the course load is heavy, plan a schedule that will enable you to accomplish the homework that is given for each class – a that can also help eliminate student stress.

Exams – One of the largest causes of student stress is the exam.  Exams, particularly finals, can determine the greater portion of the grade.  This can amount to a lot of pressure in achieving a favorable grade.  Unfortunately, there will always be some degree of student stress related to exams; this is normal. But, there are ways to reduce student stress related to taking exams.  Proper study habits can effectively reduce student stress when it comes to taking exams.  Rather than attempt to “cram” all of the information the night before, spread the study time out over a longer period of time.  This will also provide adequate rest before the exam, and help eliminating student stress related to the exam.

Social Aspects
– It is difficult to arrive at a new school with very few friends, if any.  Freshmen, in particular, can be more susceptible to this type of student stress than other students.  Trying to “fit in” and seeking friends can be a stressful situation for anyone.  Again, meeting new people and seeking healthy relationships will always account for a small burden of student stress.  But, there are ways to reduce the amount of student stress that comes along with it.  Join a club that offers an opportunity to meet people with the same interests.  Become involved in activities with people that will support and share common interests, such as a student club.

Student stress is evident in many areas of campus life.  Reduce the stress by finding ways to relax.  Reading, meditating, and physical activities are healthy ways to reduce student stress.  Unhealthy ways include drinking, drugs, and poor eating habits.  Take advantage of the time, as actions taken in school could promote a healthy life and a prosperous future.
